The Super Eagles of Nigeria ended their AFCON qualifiers with a much anticipated win over Sao Tome and Principe national team yesterday, but a a few players failed to put up a convincing performance and they need to be dropped by the coach ahead of the upcoming world cup qualifiers and AFCON proper. Here are 2 players the Super Eagles should drop if they want to perform well in upcoming matches.
1 - Taiwo Awoniyi: The Nottingham Forest striker is still struggling to hit the ground running with the Super Eagles of Nigeria. He has not really been impressive with the senior national team of Nigeria and that was also seen once again in the match against Sao Tome and Principe.
He played against the defense line of the lowest ranked team in Africa according to the latest FIFA rankings, but he was still lacking composure and was very shaky and shy in front of goal. He does not have enough ability to play as a lone striker and then again, he couldn't combine well with Victor Osimhen in attack.
Awoniyi had difficulties in blending with other attackers of the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the team would have struggled to score goals if they were up against a better team. He is not the kind of striker who should play for the Super Eagles when they face off with tougher teams like South Africa in world cup qualifiers.
2 - Frank Onyeka: The loop holes created by the Brentford player in midfield was much and it would have affected the team more significantly of they were up against a team with more experienced players. He was wasteful with possession and this is something that a more experienced team will definitely take advantage of if he is used in more competitive matches.
Onyeka could not combine well with Wilfred Ndidi in the midfield area, he lacks enough creativity and his confidence level was not a great one. He should not be in the starting lineup for Nigeria in upcoming matches.
At some point during yesterday's game, the lad was no where to be found as he was dominated by Sao Tome and Principe players. He was only good defensively and he was also poor in circulating passes, the midfield of the team will definitely be porous if he is used in upcoming matches.
